Full Sail Amber Ale
I enjoy Full Sail's Amber Ale, but I don't love it. When I'm in the mood for an amber it's not a bad choice, but usually I'm looking for something either more hoppy, like a Dogfish Head, or something different like a stout.

Bell's Double Cream Stout
Like Guinness, Double Cream Stout is not a typical stout--but don't expect Guinness, either. This beer tastes like a damn fine dark stout, but the feel is like a warm velvet blanket on a cold winter's night. Bell's knows how to play to each season, and it shows here.

Bell's Oberon
I don't normally like wheat beers, but Oberon is one of the few things I miss from Michigan. Oberon is a perfect summer brew, light but flavorful, and just easy to drink. The best Halloween party I've ever been to was powered by a late-season keg of Oberon. It brings back good memories. Drink it outside, on a summer evening, with an orange slice in a tall glass.

River Horse Tripel Horse
Tripel Horse is intense. The light aroma belies how strongly the flavor hits you, and when it does there are strong strains of traditional Lambic notes like coriander. There's a lot going on there: it's not a "just want a beer" beer.

Imagine a mixture of a stout, a heavy port, and some melted dark chocolate and you'll start getting close to the Stone Russian Imperial Stout. Also, be sure you're sitting down and really consider whether you want the full pint--it starts at around 10.8 abv before it's aged for 3-4 years. (I had a 2007.)
The flavor is huge, complex and intense, even without the alcohol, which is also intense. Take your time and appreciate it. April 7, 2011
